Department of Syntheses

Department head:   Grüner Bohumír, RNDr. CSc.

Area

This team has been established since the late 1950s thanks to lifelong work by J. Plešek, S. Heřmánek and later B. Štíbr. Boron chemistry in Řež has been gradually developping since early 1960's - practically since the beginning of significant development of this scientific discipline in the world; it hence forms one of cornerstones of the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry. The topics in the Department is represented by fundamental research on boron clusters, but its results are traditionally devoted also to search for practical implications of these interesting compounds. Novel topics have been introduced in the 2000s by B. Grüner, current Head of the team and some of his younger colleagues. The team at IIC adheres to the World Boron Community and its position here has been firmly established over many years. Borane clusters are entirely artificial molecules of surprisingly rich chemistry and remarkable 3D structures. Currently the most promising research focus is on their application in materials chemistry and pharmacology.

Facilities

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) - 400 MHz Varian Mercury spectrometer and 600 MHz JEOL Delta spectrometer - both instruments are equipped with 11B optimized probe for characterization of boron compounds

LC-MS system LCQ FLEET (Thermo-Finnigan) - analysis and characterization of compounds by determining their molecular mass; analytical HPLC separation of mixtures with tandem MS detection. The instrument is equipped with Elecrospray (ESI) and Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionization (APCI) probeheads and a spherical ion trap. HPLC system also enables DAD detection in UV-Vis range.

GC-MS system GC ISQ MS DIP+DEP AS 155 (Thermo-Fisher) - Enables analysis and characterization of sufficiently volatile compounds by determining their molecular mass; analytical GC/DIP/DEP separation of mixtures with tandem MS detection. The instrument is equipped autosampler, Gas Chromatograph Trace 1310 , Direct Insertion (DIP) and Direct Exposure (DEP) Probes and quadrupol MS detector ISQ 7000.

Analytical HPLC system LaChrom D700 (Merck-Hitachi) and Semi-Preparative HPLC System LaPrep? (VWR) - enables analysis and characterization of compounds and their separations from reaction mixtures. LaChrom D700 instrument is equipped with Diode Array Detector and ELSD detectors; LaPrep? VWR is equipped with four channel UV/ Vis detector, automatic injector and a fraction collector.

FlashSmart Elemental Analyzer (Thermo-Fisher) - analysis of elemental composition of compounds by determining H, C and N content.
