Abstract:

Hierarchical assembly provides a strategy to translate the exceptional properties of 2D materials into functional macroscopic systems. Although materials like graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) exhibit outstanding nanoscale properties, transferring these to larger, processable structures remains difficult due to restacking, disorder, and basal plane disruption. By organizing 2D building blocks across multiple length scales, architectures from nanoparticles to 3D networks can be created while preserving key features, enabled by precise control of interfacial interactions through electrostatic confinement, edge chemistry, or polymer hybridization without extensive bulk modification. This approach supports applications in conductive and thermally efficient materials, scalable structures, and stimuli-responsive drug delivery systems, bridging nanoscale properties with macro-scale functionality.
